April 30, 2012

And then April was almost over

I ended up missing a whole week of injections, because not only did I not call in my refill on time, they had screwed up the billing. So it looked like I owed a WHOLE lot of money, when I did NOT. And by the time we finally got everything straightened out, and delivered, it was just going to be easy to wait one more day.

So I took my shot last night, and now my body is rebelling, and it feels like I got hit by a truck all over again, and I can’t stop throwing up. That’s the most fun side effect of stupid chemo drugs. Luckily, I’m a vomiting pro. Sadly, that is not a fun contest to win.

In other news, everyone won their soccer MATCH on Saturday. Did you know that it’s not a game, it’s a match? Because I didn’t. BUT NOW I DO, and now you have learned something. I told you it pays to read my dumb blog.

Because I Said So

Sometimes, I say things like:

"Because I'm the Mom" and
"Because I Said So" and
"Because I Feel Like It",

because, you know, it's my right as a parent.

I just hate giving lengthy explanations to people who are going to argue with me no matter what, because, after all, they are much smarter than me and a 5 year old playing in the woods at night by themselves is a good idea.

Please enjoy this perfectly sarcastic parenting mantra from yours truly:

Took long enough…

I’m finally starting to feel like myself again.

Which, after 11 months of what can only be described as a hell, is a nice change of pace.

Most people don’t realize what sort of process goes into combating a disease on a daily basis.

For example, I forgot to call in my refill last week. Now, if you have a recurring prescription at your local pharmacy, it’s not that big of a deal, you can go in and pick it up, same day usually.

Well I forgot, and then I forgot again. And then when I remembered, the earliest shipping date was Tuesday, unless of course I wanted to pay for express shipping, which is pricey because my meds come in a great big temperature controlled styrofoam box.

And since they don’t get here until Tuesday, I’m going to miss my Sunday shot. Which is going to screw up my injection schedule. Because there is a minimum of 48 hours required between each dosage, and that’s where things get tricky.

You see, I have my injection schedule so that I can A) remember to do my shots and B) have a life outside of meds.  So this week, I get to “skip” Sunday, and then I’ll have to do my shots Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday (Ugh, I like shot free weekends better) and then Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then, the next week, I can go back to my “normal” shot schedule. All because I forgot to make a stupid phone call.

But like I said, I’m starting to feel like myself again. I’m working more (finally), and getting house projects done. I painted the downstairs bathroom a few days ago, and it looks a million times better. I’m also sketching up a few different ideas for the family room and girls room, and this summer we’re going to paint the stairs. Basically, I’m finally functioning, and able to be an active participant in family life, and that, my friends, is golden.

And then it was April

I feel like I’m losing time. Or not so much that I’m losing it, so much as it’s speeding by so quickly that it’s all I can do to keep breathing.

The kids started soccer. There is lots of driving back and forth and eating on the go. I bought chairs and a water cooler and we have a pop up tent because we are spending a lot of time outside… which is exactly the opposite of what I should be doing according to the warning labels on my meds. It probably explains why I’m so tired.

True story: I went to bed at 10 last night, woke up this morning at 8, just in time to get people off to school in a rush, then laid on the couch and had a nap until 1:00pm. Then I went to the grocery store and made dinner and, you know, interacted with my family and now it’s 8:15, my whole body is throbbing in pain, my fever has spiked, and my feet have gone numb. Of course, this is also partly because we’ve had wonky weather and I can’t deal with drastic atmospheric changes. It makes me want to die on the inside.

In other news, Taylor is getting ear tubes in a couple of weeks. I *think* her adenoids are also getting taken out, but I for the life of me can’t remember  for sure either way on that one. I know that I would PREFER them to be out, so, you know… at least there’s that.

Also speaking of Taylor, she told me that she love me so much that when I’m very old and dead, she would dig up my bones and give them to her dog, which she would name Caroline… which is my name. She is sure that this is a great honor, so I just said thank you, but I would like it known that I would prefer to not be purposely chewed on.

I also have to tell you about one of my new favorite shows. It’s called Duck Dynasty and it’s on A&E and I LOVE THAT FAMILY. We could be friends. And the grandfatherly advice from Phil is glorious.

Also next year, I am thinking about taking a class at the community college, just for kicks. I can’t decide what kind of class I should take, though. Mostly, I just want it to be at the right time. I kinda think it would be fun to take a math class… or not. I JUST DON’T KNOW. Algebra is sexy.

And now I’m going to bed, because tomorrow is our crazy day, plus also: I’m a wimp. and also, also: I have MS.

Ooh, and Easter… yes, I made people matching skirts and bow ties.

We tried jumping the same time, it just didn’t work…

The end.

Craft Stick Puzzles: Printable and Tutorial

Craft stick puzzles are one of my new favorite things.  My kids love them, and they're cheap to make, and they don't get destroyed like paper pieces.

If you haven't made craft stick puzzles before, let me tell you how tremendously easy it is.

First, download this printable (because they're cute and sized right and just all around better than other craft stick puzzles):

Print the pages on cardstock and cut around the whole puzzle (don't cut each piece out yet).

This next step is optional, but I highly recommend it.  Cover the fronts (only) in clear contact paper.  This will help your puzzles last longer, especially since you know they're going to be handled by grubby little kid fingers.

Then chop the pieces apart with a paper slicey-cutter-thingy. (There are lines on the puzzles, so you know where to chop.)

Get a bunch of big craft sticks out, and rubber cement a piece to each one.  Try to center the pieces on the craft sticks just so they look better.  If a person was smart they would put one puzzle on one side of the stick and then a different puzzle on the other side of the stick.  Therefore needing half the amount of sticks.  A not so smart person, such as myself, just uses a whole bunch of single sided sticks.

Your sticks will need to dry before you can play, but rubber cement doesn't take long to dry.

To play with the puzzles, just hand your child the finished group of sticks.  You can make it easy by separating each puzzle to do one at a time, or the whole pile so your kid has to pick the right pieces before assembling.

We really really like craft stick puzzles.  (Isn't that the cutest little monkey you have ever seen?  And I'm not talking about the cartoon one, although it's kind of cute too.)
