A birthday suggestion: Have just a few (or even just 1 or 2) friends participate in a special activity with the birthday kid rather than planning a big party. That way, the birthday kid gets a special day and fun things to do, without Mom having to deal with the trouble of a big party, big mess, big noise etc...
